Make Children Your Top Priority
Dear [Decision Maker],
I urge you to make children your top priority for the remainder of the 109th Congress. I believe society's first calling is to care for the least among us, and so far this year, I have been greatly disappointed with our nation's political "leadership."
Instead of cutting crucial programs to give massive tax breaks to our wealthiest Americans, we should invest in:
* health and mental health care coverage for all 9 million uninsured children
* child care
* child protection programs
* student loans
Congressional actions in 2006 alone widened the already historic gap between rich and poor, and left behind millions of families and children in desperate straits. And, the cries of Katrina survivors continue to be ignored.
Almost a year after children in our nation's poorest states suffered horrifying flood devastation, tens of thousands of children have been left to face their staggering losses without adequate health and mental health support. Even the emergency health care provided to some of the survivors will end on June 30th. This is a moral scandal.
Reject any future giveaways to the wealthiest Americans and invest in our children so they can get the health and mental health supports they need.
