FS NDSA Action Alert

On Wednesday, July 15, K-12 Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® program scholars participated in the annual National Day of Social Action. They took to the streets and social media to show their community and the electorate the importance of listening to their voices and casting their votes. It’s now up to state legislators to take action—and deliver on the children’s demands for safe neighborhoods, more housing for the homeless, more accountability for police officers, smaller class sizes, and more as outlined in this video.

Our nation’s children cannot vote, but they have voices and the CDF Freedom Schools National Day of Social Action is the platform they used to raise those voices. As your programs come to a close and families prepare for an uncertain school year, we invite you to use this platform with the children, youth, and families you work with to host an email writing campaign to pressure elected officials to listen to the scholars’ voices and cast their votes—their futures are in our hands. Tell your elected officials that children and families need them to act now.

Send information about your participation in the National Day of Social Action below.

Dear [Decision Maker],

In the midst of an election year, children's voices often got lost in the shuffle. I am calling on you and your colleagues to take swift action now to ensure that doesn't happen.

We as children cannot vote, but we have voices and the National Day of Social Action is the platform we used to raise our voices. On Wednesday, July 15, 2020, myself and other K-12 CDF Freedom Schools scholars across the nation participated in the annual National Day of Social Action. We took to the streets to march, hosted voter registration drives, and used social media to show our communities and the electorate the importance of listening to our voices and casting our votes. It's now up to elected officials to take action--and deliver on our demands for safe neighborhoods, more housing for the homeless, more accountability for police officers, smaller class sizes, and more as outlined in this video: https://bit.ly/ndsa-recap.

In my CDF Freedom Schools program I learned that I can make a difference in myself, my family, my community, my nation, and my world, with hope, education, and action. At my site we read books about social justice, civic engagement, and how one person can change the world. As the summer comes to a close I am excited and inspired to use what I learned to be the change I want to see.

As you craft new bills on behalf of children and families know that we--the next generation--are not only watching, our future depends on you. I will be encouraging my community to vote for people to support the issues uplifted during this year's National Day of Social Action. I'm counting on you to take urgent action to ensure our voices do not go unheard.

Sincerely,
